Acting Chancellor, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Dana Dunn

Dana Dunn

On August 1, 2014, Acting Chancellor Dana L. Dunn was selected via a national search to serve as Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She serves in the capacity of Acting Chancellor while the search for a permanent Chancellor unfolds. In her role as Provost, Dr. Dunn has responsibility for oversight of the Academic Affairs Division, Research and Economic Development, and Student Affairs.

Prior to her arrival at UNCG, Dr. Dunn served as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington. There, she also served as Special Advisor to the President, Senior Vice Provost, and Associate Dean. As a Professor of Sociology, Dr. Dunn’s teaching and research focused on gender and the workplace. She is the author of numerous textbooks, articles, and book chapters on these topics.

Dr. Dunn is committed to higher education planning and policy and served on numerous committees in Texas. Her experience with the Higher Education Coordinating Board and the University of Texas System committees such as the State Higher Education Formula Funding Advisory Committee, The University of Texas System’s Accountability Task Force, and the Graduate Education Advisory Committee have afforded her a wealth of practice in strategic planning and policy development. Considering her experience, Dr. Dunn was charged with launching the university’s strategic planning process which will culminate in a new plan to guide UNCG forward for the next ten years.

Dr. Dunn also chaired the Texas Association of Chief Academic Officers and served as a member of the American Council on Education’s Texas Women in Higher Education Steering Committee. She has been recognized for her leadership in higher education with a number of awards including the Distinguished Sociology Alumnus Award at the University of North Texas, The YWCA Women in Business Award, The Arlington Women’s Shelter Legacy of Women in Education Award, and the Arlington branch of the American Association of University Women Woman of the Year Award.

As an active member of her community in Texas, Dr. Dunn served on the board of directors for the Arlington Medical Center, the Arlington Symphony, and the Arlington Museum of Art. She also served as secretary of the board for the North Texas Business Council for the Arts.

Dr. Dunn is a native Texan and a first generation college graduate. She earned her undergraduate and Master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Dallas in Sociology and Political Economy and her Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in Sociology. Dr. Dunn is embracing her new home in North Carolina and is enthusiastically exploring Greensboro and the surrounding environs. She, Bruce Conaway and their two small dogs spend their weekends wandering in the beautiful Greensboro parks, hiking on the picturesque trails, and navigating through the multitude of cultural and arts-related events in the Greensboro area.
