Following up on recent executive order: privacy and legal resources

Posted on April 08, 2017

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As we continue to assess the implications of the recent executive order regarding travel and immigration, it is important that we provide clarity on the privacy rights of our students and ensure that members in our community with questions have access to some important resources.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prohibits UNCG from sharing confidential student records. This includes a wide range of information including but not limited to immigration status. UNCG will follow all applicable laws, with a deep commitment to protecting the privacy rights of our students. The recent executive order does not in any way change our policy or adherence to existing law.

For any UNCG students, faculty or staff who may be affected by the executive order or have additional legal questions, there are a number of resources available in our community. These resources include, but are not limited to:

If you have any additional questions, please contact the Office of General Counsel (https://www.uncg.edu/ucn/).

As a University that is committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion – ideals that are deeply woven into our institutional history and the history of our region – we understand the significance of these recent events to our community. We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as important new information is available.

Thank you,

Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr.
