Dear Spartan Family:

Many of us have family, friends, and colleagues facing the direct aftermath of Hurricane Helene. As authorities continue to establish the scope of this unspeakable devastation, I hope you — and all those you care for — are healthy, safe, and secure.

We hold close the communities hit hard by this historic storm — especially those in the western part of the state. And we extend the full support of the UNC Greensboro community for the long recovery ahead.

Below you’ll find valuable resources available to UNC Greensboro community members affected by the disaster, as well as opportunities to help.

Resources for Students and Employees:
Students who have been impacted or are feeling overwhelmed can receive support through Counseling and Psychological Services. If you are experiencing financial hardship or food insecurity, the Dean of Students Office can connect you to resources such as the Spartan Open Pantry or the SAFE Fund. Employees can receive support through ComPsych Guidance Resources.

During this time, we ask that faculty and supervisors reach out to their students and employees who have been directly affected and work with them as needed. Employees and supervisors may also contact their HR Business Partner for assistance with support (e.g., use of leave, etc.).

How to Help:
Governor Cooper has urged those who can, to donate to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund: nc.gov/donate. Donations will go to nonprofits working to meet the immediate needs of storm victims, such as food and water, cleaning supplies, and other emergency supplies. All of the donations made will go to disaster relief.

Our campus is rallying around our sister institutions that have been impacted. Those campuses have appreciated direct offers to help; however, the best way to assist is to work with UNCG Emergency Management, which is collaborating with the UNC System Office to deploy personnel and resources. Please email [email protected] if you have any additional questions.

To everyone joining in these and many related efforts: my sincere gratitude. Times of extraordinary hardship remind us of who we are — a community that answers challenges head on and shows up for North Carolina. We do this hard work together, leaving no one to stand alone.

Thank you for rising to meet this tragic moment and remembering those in need. Please continue to reach out and check in on one another. Take good care of yourself, too. And don’t forget the resources available here — the University is ready to help.

Sincerely,

Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr.
