Letter from Chancellor Gilliam to graduating students.

Posted on March 20, 2020

Dear UNCG Community,

As we continue to navigate the unexpected challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and make decisions that prioritize the health of our students and our shared community, we have determined today, consistent with UNC System guidance, that we must cancel all of our May 2020 commencement ceremonies in Greensboro.

We know this is a milestone that our students and families treasure. It is the culmination of years of investment, effort, and hard work. Given public health concerns, we simply cannot have a full ceremony together. We are now working to find meaningful alternatives to celebrate this hard-earned achievement for our graduates. This includes inviting you, our May 2020 graduates, to participate in our already-scheduled December 2020 commencement ceremonies.

We may not be able to celebrate with you in person in May, but know that we are proud of all you have accomplished. Whether you are receiving an undergraduate or graduate degree, you deserve to be recognized. We will do all we can under these unprecedented conditions to honor you as you join more than 121,000 fellow UNCG alumni around the world as part of our global Spartan family.

Thank you.

Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr.
